one day by david nicholls,,

before you start reading, i must warn you that this resume contains spoiler, beware! :p

“You’re gorgeous, you old hag, and if i could give you just one gift ever for the rest of your life it would be this. Confidence. It would be the gift of confidence. Either that or a scented candle”
― David Nicholls, One Day

finished this book last night and i amazed. simply amazed!

it’s a love story, clearly, between two character, Dexter and Emma. what makes the book unique is that for every year, David only told us the story of one day dated 15th July, which is in England is commemorated as St. Swithin’s Day, a day on which people says that whatever the weather is like on St. Swithin’s Day, it will continue so for the next forty days. but in this book, the date become special because it’s the date when Dex and Em first met.

the love story is interesting and give me a comprehension that true love will stay the same forever, but the feelings might change, so normal, so human. but what impressed me most is the life journey of each Dex and Em, the up and down for 20 years of their life. at first, the life of Dex, a rich and handsome man, seemed so smooth and fun, while on the other side, Emmas’s struggling with bad job and bad love life. however, as time goes by, everything started to change. thanks to Dex, Emma started to get a grab on herself, pursuing career that she like and start to have a good life, but at the same time Dex lost control of his life and started to mess things up. the story ended up quite well, i guess, with Emma being a succesful writer and Dex managed to start over, opening a store slash cafe of his own.

and i learn from the story that it indeed takes some time, i talked about years here, to find a job you love and a life that you desire. get a grab of yourself, start doing things that you want to do, that you enjoy to do. that way you’ll create a path to the so called dream job. don’t forget to do all of those things with confidence, because you will get fall, absolutely, and you’ll need that confidence to get up again.

and oh, only until you finished reading the book, you’ll understand the story of the cover :p

happy reading 🙂
